Thanks for the clarification. The resistors were sized so that the user doesn't have to sit there for a minute waiting for the caps to charge. But what you say makes sense. I wouldn't think this would cause a hard failure though - go figure. I'll post a note on my page advising against the mod on the MMM. Any other ESCs where this is a no-no?

And yes, the intent was to save the connectors from pitting caused by the initial arcing.
