novak HV on 4s - 01.11.2009, 11:47 AM

I did the single battery mod and added an ubec.

Normally I would just remove the red wire from the esc RX connection but reading the manual it says leave the switch in the off position.

Presumably this powers the esc from the ubec.

Does anyone see any issue with removing the red wire and using the internal bec to drive the esc?

PS don't ask why i'm using a novak HV and 6.5

Why use an external Ubec on the HV? I have 2 of these 6.5 systems, one in an Erevo, the other in a Kyosho GT conversion, both running on 4s. I havent had one problem so far with the internal BEC, and my Erevo is using 2 steering servo's. I was too lazy to resolder for the single wire conversion, so just made a jumper incase I want to run 2-2s packs.
The Novak HV's are actually pretty good, I know PPL knock them, but when I can grab a hand full of throttle on the Erevo it will flip on its lid...I dont need any more power.

Howdy,

The HV Pro ESC has a circuit inside that protects the ESC from "Servo Voltage". This circuit needs to be turned on then off.

So when you turn on your RX battery pack/UBEC, the ESC will not run the motor, but the servos will work. At that point, turn the ESC on, then back off again. When you run the car, always have the ESC off.

Older HV ESC's do not have this protection, so this extra step of switch flipping is not needed.

The ESC will not work correctly if you remove the red wire from the input harness.

I actually like the way the Novak HV Pro performs better than my MMM. The Novak is more drivable/raceable for me. The throttle response and power band of the Novak fits my racing style much better. I am still using the MMM in my truggy so I am continueing to investigate throttle curves etc to make the MMM more raceable for me.

You should be able to use a simple series adapter between your esc power inputs to accomplish this. Charlie is right on with his post.

The HV Pro can handle 5S Lipo but from what I've heard the esc heats up just as much as it does on 4S. I haven't tried 5S as I am having very good performance with 4S.

OK Thanks - It is an older one without the lipo cut off.

So ubec - red wire in - esc in off position!

Thanks

.
Why is this information not included in the "Using a Reciever Battery Pack" section of the instructions....?

Just spent a good 2 or 3 hours trying to figure out why the ESC wouldnt come on after following the directions in the manual.
