Yes, single BL is the way to go. Unless you are going to be doing tractor pulls with it (massive torque with dual BL), then I would go single.
I went dual on my E-Maxx more for the "WOW" factor than anything. I also have a single BL E-Maxx as well.
As far as speed goes, the dually was faster. If I remember correctly, I got 44mph out of the single 9L Maxx on 14 cells and 51mph out of the dual 9L Maxx and 28cells. I have since swithced the 9L's for 2 7XL's and got rid of the 28 cells for two 5s LiPo packs.

Bottom line is that for half the price (not to mention the weight difference, my dual weighs over 3lbs. more) single can get pretty close to a dual setup for speed if geared propperly.
